The Importance of Promoting Legal Immigration and Border Security

HIGHLANDS, NJ, July 2nd – Sixth District Congressional candidate, Anna Little, said that the
U.S Supreme Court decision last week to strike down Arizona’s immigration law fails to protect
the citizens of the United States.
While the Supreme Court upheld the Arizona provision allowing officers to inquire about
immigration status during lawful stops, the Court struck down all other provisions of the Arizona
law, holding that federal immigration law preempts them under the U.S. Constitution.
Responding to the Arizona decision, Anna Little said, “A country that does not secure its borders
will cease to be a sovereign nation. Preventing the flow of gang members, criminals, and
terrorists into our country is the first step in protecting our Republic, and ensuring our national
security."
This is where our Federal government has failed the citizens and future citizens of the United
States of America. Many immigrants come to America to escape the high crime rates,
oppression, or extreme poverty that exists in their home country. Unfortunately, many do not
understand how to legally apply for entrance into the U.S.
Yet they are so desperate to escape with their families, that they pay human smugglers to bring
them into the United States illegally, in the mistaken belief that it’s the only way out. Once in the
U.S., however, the smugglers abandon some of these illegal immigrants in the desert, or - in the
case of many of the women - the smugglers kidnap them and force them into prostitution. When
Condoleezza Rice was Secretary of State, the Federal Government took active action in rescuing
women and arresting human traffickers involved in this modern day slave trade.
Criminal gangs smuggle in drugs that harm people's lives, health, and our Nation's economic
productivity. These drug sales enable the gangs to buy firearms that are then turned on law
enforcement officers and innocent citizens.
This is exemplified by “Fast and Furious,” the disastrous operation about which U.S Attorney
General Eric Holder deliberately refuses to answer questions from Congress. This program
willfully permitted automatic weapons to be sold and transported to the drug cartels that threaten
to destabilize Mexico.
Securing the borders is one part of the equation to protect our nation. In order to correct the
immigration situation, we must promote a simplified and timely legal immigration process, so
that everyone has a clear understanding of how to legally enter the U.S.
We need elected officials who will rise to the challenge of promoting legal immigration,
preventing human trafficking, and reducing the influence that the criminals have in our nation.
We must work together to ensure that the United States remains a beacon of freedom and liberty
that encourages people to legally immigrate and become citizens of the country of their choice.
Only by electing a new President, Senate leadership, and a new Congressional Representative
can the U.S. Attorney General be made to answer for the deaths of American and Mexican
Federal Agents that occurred as a result of his approved operations.
